Conservation Planning Specialist

Qualifications:

HS/GED Degree OR Minimum of 3 year(s) of experience in conservation planning, conservation practice design and installation, or experience in natural resource issues in agricultural settings.

  • 3 years of experience in conservation planning, conservation practice design and installation, or experience in natural resource issues in agricultural settings is preferred in addition to high school diploma.
  • Current Motor Vehicle Operator’s License required.
  • Experience required with Windows, Fax, Copying Machine, MS Word, MS Excel
  • Software unique to NRCS
Duties:

Supports the District Conservationists in Wilkes, Yadkin and Surry counties. Work will be performed in support of Farm Bill Programs and Conservation Technical Assistance (CTA). The tasks will generally consist of assisting others, collecting data, modifying or preparing limited design adaptations, applying accepted conservation practices, preparing reports, conducting training, coordinating and communicating with conservationists, engineers, customers and other NRCS personnel and partners.

  • Provide technical and administrative support, recommendations, and implementation assistance on a wide range of conservation programs. This may include but is not limited to conservation planning and application assistance, development of cost lists, ranking criteria, contract development, status reviews, case file management, and general administrative activities.    30%
  • Prepare guidance to Landowners/Producers for the application of soil conservation practices. Practice application includes but is not limited to field investigations, topographic site surveying, practice analysis and design, layout, construction inspection, and development of as built plans.    20%
  • Assist Landowners/Producers with the preparation of contracts for conservation practices/plans approved and funded. The assistance may include development of a time schedule with construction deadlines, quality performance requirements, contract modification support, contract status reviews, project documentation and payment application support.    20%
  • Inspect and provide checkout of conservation practice application constructed or being constructed directly for the individual Landowner/Producer. Inspection shall insure that work is performed in accordance with approved design, the USDA program contract, Field Office Technical Guide and Landowner/Producer expectations. Check out includes verification in order to document work for payment processes.    15%
  • Conduct contract status reviews for cost share contracts selected by the district conservationist. Reviews will address items listed in 440-V-CPM, Part 512.55(c) and will be signed by the reviewer as well as the NRCS district conservationist. This review will provide information only. The district conservationist will be responsible for addressing problems with the participant.    15%

Other:
  • Will provide training on agency online systems, including Toolkit, ProTracts, and the Performance Results System
  • Overnight travel: A government vehicle will be made available in the event access is required.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Some of the work is outside and on farms where farm machinery is present. Additionally, practice implementation may require working around heavy equipment in the field. Routine safety precautions to avoid injury is needed. Also, enrollee will need to dress appropriately for temperature and weather conditions.
