Conservation Technician

BA/BS Degree OR Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in Natural resources planning field Previously completed training in Conservation Planning and Engineering Design

  • Knowledge of conservation planning related to soil, water, air, plants and animals and addressing associate resource concerns; knowledge of engineering design principles and job approval authority, knowledge of Farm Bill and State Agricultural Cost Share Programs.
  • Valid drivers license

The enrollee will provide assistance to the District Conservationist at the Quinton Service Center and other NRCS staff by completing the following work: Plan, design & write conservation plans and engineering design support for Farm Bill programs and contracts. Assists soil conservationist and soil conservation technician with survey, design, installations, training, checkout and follow-up

  • Works with District Conservationist(s) to develop conservation plans and Farm Bill contracts. Plans include developing alternatives to address soil, water, air, plants, animals and energy resource concerns. In addition, associated maps (plan, soils, CRR, T&E, etc) are developed to accompany the plan and the CPA-52 60%
  • Independently completes engineering designs for Farm Bill contracts 40%


  • computer security, annual ethics, civil rights training & program related training, etc.
  • Use of NRCS software - Tool Kit, the Progress Reporting Systems, ArcGIS, & Planning, & Access database software training
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Walking through woody areas will require training in basic first aid for tick & snake bites, an orientation session on the importance of proper wearing apparel such as long sleeve shirts, boots, sun screen, and finally, use of defensive driving techniques when operating a government vehicle. Initial orientation session and then periodic follow-up
  • Required Safety Gear: Note: First aid kit and bio-security supplies furnished by the agency.
  • Safety Gear Use: The work involves regular and recurring exposure to operating agricultural equipment or earth moving operations, adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat and cold and unimproved roads. Protective equipment is necessary on construction sites.
