Timber Business Specialist may work remotely up to 32 hours per week. The NOWCC employee must have adequate computer equipment and reliable and fast Internet service. The incumbent will be expected to coordinate with Forest Service SME using video conferencing
The Timber Business Specialist will research, develop, coordinate and recommend a business structure for the implementation of tribally-owned vegetation treatment businesses with Tribal Nations and the Black Hills National Forest. See attached Statement of Work
Serve as the point of contact for the development of the Small Diameter and Vegetation Business for interested tribal nations, Black Hills NF, and Timber staff in the Regional Office. 5%
Utilize expertise and knowledge of timber sales and timber contracting to develop a small business model for the purpose of engaging interested Tribal Nations. This will include training and capacity building in: equipment uses and safety, crew management, business invoicing and reimbursement procedures, bidding practices, and overall awareness and knowledge building of timber contracting and bidding projects. 75%
Outreach, assess, coordinate and promote opportunities in the development of native timber and small diameter treatment businesses to implement economic action opportunities and develop a sustainable and skills-based workforce. This will include making presentations to tribal councils, interacting with Tribal Natural Resource Directors, potentially other federal and state agencies with complementary services and resources. 20%
Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience OR BA/BS Degree
Certified Forester, Qualified Wildland Fire Fighter, Timber Contracting Officer, Tribal Natural Resources, Conservation Corps Leader, Private Contracting Forester or Natural Resources Consultant
Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point
Overnight travel: Estimated travel is related to project work - 3-day/trip/summer months
Required Safety Gear: Specific gear to be determined.
Safety Gear Use: Will be used while in the field and during particular training events with tribal members.
Physical requirements: The incumbent must be in good physical health. Walking short and long distances, climbing moderately to steep grades, driving a car, and make field visits to the forest and tribal reservations is part of the activities associated with this position.
