With so many SEE enrollees excelling in their positions with EPA, it is always difficult to choose just one for this month’s Enrollee Spotlight. However, Ms. Sandra Cross is a standout. She currently works for the EPA Laboratory in Houston, TX as a Laboratory Program Assistant. Her work entails receiving and logging in all samples received at the Environmental Services Branch Laboratory for analysis. Ms. Cross logs them into the LIM’s system, verifies the chain of custody records for received samples. She also, provides additional assistance for other lab projects or activities.
Ms. Cross is well versed in laboratory protocol as she worked in the Lab for Kopper’s Industries for 23 years where she blended raw materials to meet customer’s specifications using ASTM and AWPA Methods. She performed wastewater analysis, preparing reports and certificates of analysis. She also was responsible for the calibration of equipment, ordering chemicals, supplies and equipment, keeping material safety data sheets current, and internal auditing of SOP’s for ISO compliance. As Chief Chemist, Ms. Cross supervised and trained a staff of lab technicians, conducted safety, health and environmental meetings, involved in the logistics process, and licensed to read visible emissions.
In addition to her knowledge of laboratory work, Ms. Cross has recently broadened her knowledge of the business world by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Business with a Concentration on Human Resources Management from the University of Phoenix. Now with a background in science and an education in business, she has an impressive skill set that will enable her to continue her professional growth and provide even greater versatility for EPA.
